What's Happening at the Library!

By Jimmie Epling

A Literary Taste of South Carolina

A Literary Taste of South Carolina is coming on Saturday, June 11th to Hartsville!  Usually, when you hear someone say “A Taste of…” you immediately think of food.  This one is going to be different as it will feature authors and their writings!

The Burry Book Store, the Library, and Hartsville merchants will be hosting the first ever “Literary Taste of South Carolina.”  It will feature a variety of writers in different Hartsville venues where you can meet, listen to, and talk to authors about their writings.

This event will wrap up our series of South Carolina New Writers’ Workshops.  There are two remaining workshops at the Darlington Branch with author C. Hope Clark, “Write It...Read It...Rewrite It...Repeat! - Successful Editing” on April 26th at 6:30 p.m. and “Get Your Story Out There! - Getting Published” on May 24th at 6:30 p.m.

If you are interested in becoming a part of the “Literary Taste of South Carolina,” contact Jimmie Epling at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or by calling at 843.398.4940, ext. 303.

“How to” Videos Online at the Library

When you want to know if the Library has something you want to read, listen to, or watch what do you do?  If you are an independent, “I’ll do it myself” type, you will go straight to the Library’s online catalog from home or when you visit.  For the uninitiated to our catalog, those who have used the catalog of other libraries, or searched for something on, the Library’s catalog can at first appear to be a puzzling thing.   Once you have used it for a bit, you will find what you are looking for quickly.  If you are new to it, understanding the instructions and layout of the page might be slightly frustrating.  We have a way to help you not only navigate the catalog to find what you want, but to also download an e-book or e-magazine, check your account, or renew an item.

For those still wondering how to do these things, we now have a series of online videos that might help you.  Darlington Branch Reference Assistant Tony Watkins has created several short animated slide shows that will show you step by step how to:

·         Search the online catalog.

·         Reserve an item.

·         Renew something you have out.

·         Download free e-books, e-audiobooks, and e-magazines.

·         Check your account to see what you have out and when the items are due.

These “How to…” videos make it easy for you to learn as they walk you through the process so you can do it on your own.  You can check them out on our website,, or go to “TheIDCLSIChannel” on YouTube.

Hartsville Branch Thursday Morning Walking Club

The Hartsville Branch will kick off its Thursday Morning Walking Club tomorrow at 9 a.m.  Participants will get a Library water bottle to help them stay hydrated when exercising.

Walkers, led by assistant branch manager Martha Brown, will follow a two mile route starting and finishing at the Library.  She and Branch Manager Audrey Tripp tested out the route last weekend and found it an easy walk.  The Thursday Morning Walking Club is a great way to make new friends and get in shape for the summer.  Come join us for a fun and refreshing experience.

Hartsville Friends of the Library Stock Up for Summer Book Sale

The Friends will be holding their annual “Stock Up for Summer Book Sale” May 20th-22nd in the Hartsville Branch community room.  If you are doing spring cleaning and need to get rid of some books, DVDs, or audio books, the Library is a wonderful place to donate to.

The Library’s staff looks over all donations and selects those needed for the collection.  Your donations save the Library thousands of dollars each year.  The donations that are not added to the collection are given to the Friend’s for their book sales.  The book sales are a major fundraiser for the Friends.  All the funds raised are used to support programs and services at the Hartsville Branch.  We expect to have a bumper crop of items available for sale at the May book sale.  If you want to have some summer reading that you don’t need to worry about checking out, getting wet at the beach or by the pool, and returning on time, put the Friends book sale dates on your calendar!

Word of the Week

Linkster (noun) Someone born after the year 2002, said to be “linked” into technology since birth.  A linkster may grow up with no land line phone (cell phones only), never holding a book (e-book reader/tablet only), never learning cursive writing, and never writing a check or walking into a bank.  The Library’s Digital Branch is designed to meet the information and recreational reading and listening needs of linksters and technophiles.
