Page 1 of 2 Darlington Library service can be traced to the early 1880’s. It began when the Darlington Guards Library was established for guard members and their families. In the early 1900’s the Carnegie Foundation helped to erect a permanent library. In 1928 plans were made to enlarge the library. In 1932 the WPA helped the community to enlarge the library.
Hartsville Library history can trace its roots back to 1936. In 1950, the library’s name was changed to Hartsville Memorial Library. When the Center Theater Community Building was built all Hartsville Library collections were housed in rooms upstairs. The next move was in 1964 to the building next to the Post Office.
Our third library opened in 1962 in a small room in the rear of the Lamar Town Hall and was incorporated into the Darlington County Library System which was established by an act of the S.C. Legislature in 1968.
The Society Hill Library was organized December 7, 1822. It is one of the oldest social libraries founded in South Carolina. In 1971, the library was renovated and reopened as the fourth member in the library system.
In 1988 a new building was built to replace the older Darlington Library, in 1994 a new Hartsville Memorial Library was constructed from a renovated grocery store which was enlarged 6 years later. Also in 1994 Society Hill Library was moved to its present location. Our newest library the Lamar Library was opened in 2003.
